Scholarship

The Barry Scholarship Program is a cohort experience providing a two or four year annually-renewable college scholarship of up to $5000 per year for graduating high school PaY seniors who demonstrate exceptional character, leadership, and commitment to serving their community. The program provides financial support, professional development, and personal support throughout the journey of pursuing an education at any nonprofit college or university. Our goal is to not only ensure students succeed in college, but also to help students thrive after graduation. Other scholarship opportunities are available through our Philanthropy: Forward program.

Philanthropy: Forward is a unique community of young professionals passionate about making a difference in their collegiate and professional careers.

2024-25 Important Dates:

  • Why should I apply?
    - The Barry Scholarship Program is far more than just financial support. It’s a cohort experience that involves 1:1 meetings with TBF Staff, Scholarship Workshops twice a year, Barry Scholar Seminars with local university presidents, and various learning/engagement opportunities. Our goal is to provide you with the resources, skills, and support to help you thrive in college and beyond. - Renewable 2- or 4-year scholarship valued up to $20,000 - The Scholarship Covers: Tuition & Fees, On-campus room and board, and books purchased through the college/university.
  • Who is able to apply for the Barry Scholarship Program?
    - Active members in PaY that are seniors in high school with plans of attending college the following school year. It does not matter how many years you've been in PaY. - Those in good academic standing, though this is not a scholarship program based around a certain GPA. - Students that are able to share about their experiences in PaY - how they have shaped you, what impact PaY has made on you, and the impact you've made on your community through PaY.
  • What is the application timeline and process?
    - Applications are accepted between Nov. 15th - Feb. 15th. - The application is filled out online through the Barry Portal and takes between 3-5 hours to complete on average. - Interviews are conducted in early March. - Scholarship recipients are announced in mid-April.
  • What materials will be needed to complete my application?
    - Resume - Cover Letter - 2 letters of recommendation - one of which is from your PaY Advisor - Short Essay Questions
  • If I don't become a Barry Scholar, what other scholarships or scholar programs are available?
    - All seniors and applicants for the Barry Scholarship Program are invited to be a part of an active alumni program Philanthropy: Forward. Special recognition scholarships are provided for Barry Scholarship Finalists who join Forward. - The PaY Forward Scholarship is a one-time scholarship awarded to selected applicants for their freshman year. This scholarship amount is at the discretion of the Scholarship Selection Committee during the application process. This program provides additional colligate and professional support, opportunities, and connections throughout their college experience. - When you apply for the Barry Scholarship Program, you are automatically eligible for the PaY Forward Scholarship. - There are other scholarship opportunities available through the Forward program once you are in college, like Problems to Possibilities (P2P). This is a program that challenges students to think differently about entrepreneurship and change-making. Hosted by North Dakota State University Center for Entrepreneurship and Family Business, P2P leverages systems-thinking and local networks to drive social, environmental, and economic progress. Along with the participation scholarship, national and international competition opportunities are available.
  • What expenses does the Barry Scholarship Cover?
    Tuition and Fees, Room and Board (on campus), and books purchased through the school.
  • Where can the Barry Scholarship be used?
    Barry Scholars may attend any National two-year or four-year, nonprofit, accredited college or university. International schools require special approval by the Scholarship Committee.
  • What are the Barry Scholarship requirements?
    - Fulfill a work requirement (5 hours a week as a freshman, 10 hours a week sophomore-senior year). - Attend required Scholarship Workshops in summer and winter and engage in additional programming opportunities throughout the year. - Maintain adequate communication with TBF Staff (RSVPing to events in timely manner, sharing changes in college plans, filling out Accommodation Requests, etc.). - Submit mid-year and end of year reports with financial and academic updates. - Conduct 1:1 meeting twice a year with TBF Staff.
  • How many scholarships are granted each year?
    The number of scholars granted each year is fluid and largely contingent upon quality of scholar applications received and budgetary restrictions that year.
  • Where can I go to school?
    - You can go to any nonprofit two-to-four-year college or university in the United States. International schools need to have special approval. - There are special gatherings for those that attend school within the region - like Barry Scholar Presidential Seminars with university presidents. - University of North Dakota offers a special tuition match for Barry and PaY Forward Scholars that applies to those with financial need.
  • Can I apply my scholarship for post grad studies?
    If you're unable to utilize your full scholarship during your undergraduate studies, this could be an option. You may fill out an accommodation request via the Barry Portal providing documentation that supports your request.
  • Can I use my scholarship for books?
    Yes, if books are purchased through the college directly. We do not reimburse for books purchased elsewhere.
  • What qualifies as a work requirement?
    Any paid position that can be documented with a pay stub or W2. Please fill out an Accommodation Request through the Barry Portal with any exceptions to this, such as clinicals required for your major.
  • Can I defer my tuition for a year?
    Yes. Deferring scholarship payments can be requested via Barry Portal with an Accommodation Request form.
  • Under what circumstances would I not be able to use my entire scholarship?
    - The scholarship is up to $20,000, which is allotted based off of financial need of the Barry Scholarship Program covered expenses. - Payments are made each fall and spring semester - up to $2,500 per semester. - Examples of when this amount would not be utilized: - The scholar has other scholarship/grants which negate a financial need for the student. - The scholar does not complete graduation requirements. - Scholars that don't pursue a bachelor's degree after completing their associate degree at a two-year college.
  • Can I utilize my scholarship for study abroad or other special/domestic academic opportunities?
    Yes, if appropriate documentation from your college is provided outlining the cost and credits earned for the study abroad. Payment must be through the college you're enrolled in. This process requires Scholarship Committee review and approval. You can begin this approval process by filling out an Accommodation Request via the Barry Portal.
